Fearwoods Development Update: Multiplayer Fixes, Compass Rework, and Immersive Audio

Welcome back to the forest, survivors!

The active development of Fearwoods is moving forward at full speed, and we have a lot of exciting updates to share with you today. From the very beginning, our goal has been to build this 3-player co-op survival horror experience alongside our community. Thanks to your incredibly valuable feedback from recent playtests, we have been hard at work refining the atmosphere, fixing gameplay loops, and making the demon’s hunt even more terrifying.

If you are a fan of psychological pressure, limited light, and teamwork, this update brings a lot of crucial changes that will completely elevate how the game feels.

Gameplay & Navigation Upgrades

Getting lost in the fog is part of the terror in Fearwoods, but navigation needs to be reliable. We have completely overhauled our navigation mechanics to ensure tension feels exciting rather than frustrating.

  • Compass Logic Rework: We have changed the core behavior of the compass. The movement range is now consistently distance-based instead of randomly shrinking, giving you much better spatial awareness as you hunt for GPS fragments.
  • Collision Cleanup for a Scarier Demon: We noticed that some environmental collision objects were unintentionally blocking the demon and breaking the chase sequences. We have removed these unnecessary collisions. The demon can now chase you fluidly through the trees—so watch your back!
  • Trap Spawner Fixes: We are continuously correcting interior trap spawn points across the map to ensure that every haunted building you enter is perfectly balanced to catch you off guard.

Immersive Audio Enhancements

In Fearwoods, sound is just as important as light. We are currently implementing dynamic audio systems that will directly impact your survival strategy.

Here is what we are actively improving on the audio front:

  • Chase & Hunt Audio Update: When you activate the GPS during a high-stakes chase phase, all surrounding noise will fade out, and you will only hear your own rapid heartbeat. This drastically improves auditory clarity while maximizing the psychological tension.
  • Surface-Based Footsteps: We are actively implementing dedicated footstep sounds for both the players and the demon. Soon, you will be able to distinguish whether someone (or something) is walking on concrete, wood, or sand.
  • Player Footstep Adjustments: We are reducing the audible distance of player footsteps to provide much better spatial balance. You will no longer easily confuse your co-op partner’s footsteps with the monster lurking nearby.
  • Helicopter Audio Range Increase: Good news for your extraction! We are increasing the distance at which you can hear the rescue helicopter, giving you a clearer directional goal when it is time to make a desperate sprint for freedom.

Multiplayer Stability & Co-Op Fixes

Since Fearwoods relies heavily on 3-player online co-op, multiplayer stability is our top priority. We have squashed some major bugs that were interrupting your sessions:

  • Invisible Player Bug Fixed: We resolved an issue where one player would spawn invisible in 3-player lobbies. All players will now correctly spawn together and remain visible.
  • Rejoining Sessions: Guests can now properly and smoothly rejoin active multiplayer sessions after returning to the main menu.
  • UI & Compass Polishing: The compass will no longer keep pulsing incorrectly after you collect all the GPS fragments, and rune pulsing now works exactly as intended while you are on the move.

What is Next for Fearwoods?

We are not slowing down! Beyond these current fixes, we are actively experimenting with new mechanics to expand the horror.

We are currently working on expanding the compass into a haunted music box mechanic, which will act as an anti-camera spam tool and massively increase immersion. We are also designing brand new variations of fear-inducing screamers, more complex blood rune textures, and preparing to expand our narrative into upcoming maps like Greyhaven and The Womb.
